The Wheaton Franciscans are the United States province of an international congregation, the Franciscan Sisters, Daughters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. The international congregational offices are based in Rome, Italy. Our international congregation is led by our General Directress and the General Council.
The General Directress and her Council is responsible for promoting unity in the Congregation, deepening Franciscan spirituality, and fostering the charism of our foundress. The General Directress also represents the Congregation before Church and civil authorities.
The General Council is composed of the General Directress and elected councilors. Their most important tasks are:
- To lead the Congregation in its effort to live according to the Gospel within the scope of the constitutions of the Congregation;
- To implement decisions made by the General Chapter;
- To cooperate on inter-congregational and international levels.
The Franciscan Sisters, Daughters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary also have provinces (sectors or regions) located in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Indonesia, and Brazil. Congregational members also serve in missions located in Malawi, East Timor, and Romania.
